A FEW WORDS ABOUT BATTERY PACKS
Batteries, batteries, batteries... All our R/C toys need them; even our glow fuel/nitro burning rigs need batteries to run the receiver and servos. We try our best to maintain a good selection of budget to pro-level battery packs on hand to supply our local racers as well as our Internet customers.
These days, packs consist of groups of cells that were cycled, tested, labeled with final test results and sold by packs of four or six consisting of cells of equal characteristics. This cell testing and processing weeds out weak cells, helps ensure that quality packs are readily available for our R/C hobby needs and divides cells into packs priced based upon expected performance levels. Thus we have the same make and model of cells being sold at different cost levels because of subtle differences internally in the cell structures and/or benefits gained by performance processing techniques making some packs a little stronger and/or have slightly more run time than others. That slight advantage is what you are paying for when you chose the most expensive pack of a battery matcher.
How important is it to have those top-shelf pro-level matched packs? The answer depends on you. Are you a serious racer that finds it important to place well in the "A" main at your races, a semi-serious racer that is mainly competing for the fun of being an R/C hobbyist, or only just enjoy playing with your R/C rig in the back yard or any available area? If you are just playing in the yard, buy a sport-level pack or a pack of matched cells in the cheaper-level. There is no need for you to waste your money on buying anything better. If you are a racer and like to really move, but generally are lucky to get into the "A" main and are just happy to be racing, mid to lower level matched cells are just fine. When I don't place well in the "A" main, it is generally not the fault of my equipment. It is because I didn't drive well and/or set my car or buggy up right and just got beat. If your are really serious about constantly being in that "A" main group and want to be #1. Be prepared to keep spending those big-bucks and don't cry about it. Spending those big-bucks is the choice you have made for yourself by deciding to compete at such a high-level.
